Why Do Teeth Stain or Discolour?
Tooth colour naturally varies from person to person, but several common factors can lead to staining over time:
- Drinking tea, coffee, cola, or red wine
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Poor oral hygiene habits
- Ageing (thinner enamel, darker dentin)
- Certain medications (especially in childhood)
- Dental trauma or enamel defects
- Excessive fluoride exposure during development

At your consultation, we’ll identify what type of discolouration you have — and whether whitening is the right option for you.
We’ll help you choose the right option for your goals and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can teeth whitening damage your teeth
Not when done professionally. At Asnaan Dentistry Northcliff, we use enamel-safe, clinically tested products and always assess your oral health before starting. Temporary sensitivity is possible, but long-term damage is extremely unlikely when whitening is done under the care of a qualified dentist. We take time to assess your oral health first, checking for Gum recession or inflammation, dental cavities or cracked fillings, and existing crowns, veneers, or bonding (which do not whiten). If needed, we’ll recommend addressing these concerns before proceeding — so you get the safest and most effective results.
When does teeth whitening not work?
Whitening is very effective for external (surface) stains caused by food, drinks, or smoking. However, it may not work well on:
- Deep internal stains (from trauma or certain medications)
- Grey or blue-tinted discolouration
- Teeth with thin enamel In these cases, we’ll guide you toward alternatives like veneers or internal bleaching (in select cases).
Will teeth whitening work on fillings?
No — composite fillings and bonding materials do not respond to whitening gel. If you have visible fillings on your front teeth, we may recommend replacing them after whitening to match your new, brighter shade. We’ll always discuss this during your consultation.
.
Will teeth whitening damage crowns or veneers?
No, but it also won’t lighten them. Whitening gel has no effect on ceramic materials like crowns, veneers, or bridges. If these restorations are stained or mismatched in colour, we can explore replacement options to blend them with your whitened natural teeth.
Do teeth whitening strips work — and how are they different from what dentists use?
Over-the-counter strips can slightly brighten teeth, but they’re weaker and less targeted than professional whitening.
At Asnaan Dentistry, we use stronger, prescription-level gels in custom-fitted trays or controlled in-chair applications — meaning safer use, better results, and less risk of uneven whitening or gum irritation. If you’re serious about whitening, professional treatment offers longer-lasting, more even results.
